Recap

The question on everyone’s mind this season could possibly be, what happens when you lose the conference player of the year who led the league in points (21.7) and rebounds (12.6) per game, was the main focus of opponents’ defenses and was a major spark for the Lakers at both ends of the court?
The answer according to Head Coach Bob Booher is easy, “We now have the advantage.”
Huh? An advantage he says, after losing National Junior College Athletic Association All-American nominee Cyrita Johnson and two other starters who helped the Lakers earn second place in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference with a record of 10-4. Not to mention, last year’s team competed in the semi-finals of the Region XII Tournament and finished the year with a 22-7 overall record.
Before you dismiss Coach Booher as a little crazy, give him a chance to explain.
“I don’t think teams will focus on shutting down one player like they seemed to do last season,” said Coach Booher, “We now have more scoring potential from all five spots on the floor.”
Last season when you heard the word Lakers, most immediately thought Johnson, but this year you’ll think Johnson who? There will be at least a dozen reasons for that memory loss, beginning with the Laker defense.
Assistant Coach Joe Perella heads up the well-known piranha-pressure that focuses on full-court traps and tight man-to-man defenses.
“We take a lot of chances on defense, but it pays off,” said Coach Perella, “We coach our kids to be aggressive and go after the ball; we don’t want them waiting for the opponent to bring the ball to them.”
That same no-waiting philosophy can also be applied to the Laker offense.
“We’re not going to sit back and let our opponents dictate what style of offense we’re going to run, “said Coach Booher, “Instead, we’re going to hit teams with an offensive arsenal that includes two-post, single-post and open-post varieties.”
“We’re hoping to create multiple match-up problems for our opponents,” said Coach Booher, “and considering the level of talent we have at all five spots, this is a great possibility.”
So now you know their plan for this season, but you still aren’t convinced of the big advantage. How about 13 more reasons?
“You’re going to lose quality players every year,” said Coach Booher, “but the key is getting your sophomores to step-up, while your freshman continue to make important contributions. I think we may have that key with the 13 players we have.”
Those 13 players include six returning Lakers, one sophomore transfer and six talented freshmen. Still need more convincing? Here’s a look at the 13 players who will make last season nothing but a blur.
Perimeter players, the Lakers have a handful.
“We have five legitimate day-in-day-out three-point shooters,” said Coach Booher.
The long-range bombers include two returning All-Conference honorees, Heidi Galm (Second-Team OCCAC) and Sher’ree Glover (OCCAC Honorable Mention).
“Galm made 66 from beyond the arc last season and we’re looking for her shooting percentage to improve,” said Coach Booher, “She can definitely score in bunches and fire it up with the best of them.”
As for Glover, Coach Booher regards her as their opponents’ number one match-up problem, “Glover not only shoots well from the outside, but she scores well from the inside.”
Sophomore guard Akia Booker is another of the Lakers’ gunners.
“Booker is certainly not afraid to put it up from out there, we want her to be patient and take good shots,” said Coach Booher, “She also has the ability to create plays.”
Rounding out Lakeland’s three-point specialists are sophomore Chenita Sumlin and freshman Jaimie Wilson.
“Sumlin is gaining confidence in her shot with each passing practice; she will be an instant scoring threat off the bench,” said Coach Booher.
Wilson set area three-point scoring records as a high school senior and could carry on that tradition as she adjusts to the collegiate level.
“Our opponents will have great difficulty if we team-up Wilson and Galm at the same time,” said Coach Booher.
But the Laker offense won’t be solely based on outside shooting. The Lakers have four inside players who’ll be counted on heavily.
Sophomore Monica Gerlosky and freshman Carrie Fields will take on much of the workload in the paint.
“Gerlosky is more aggressive this season, and we’re hoping she can capitalize on her inside scoring opportunities,” said Coach Booher, “Fields will give us a strong inside scoring presence and we expect her to be tough on the boards.”
Sophomore Stacy Pacholke and freshman Monique Smith will also provide quality minutes in the middle.
“Pacholke and Smith are our most physical players; Stacy sets the meanest screens and Monique is explosive through the lane,” said Coach Booher.
So that’s what’s going on in the inside and the outside of the Laker offense, but who’s in charge of the floor?
“For the first time in my basketball coaching career, we actually have two natural point guards,” said Coach Booher.
He’s referring to sophomore Meghan Goode and freshman Jen Brozak. Goode comes to the Lakers after spending her first year of college at Central Florida Community College. She could be one of the most exciting passers Lakeland has seen in years.
“Goode is a quick and explosive ball handler with great court awareness,” said Coach Booher, “Her unselfishness is unparalleled and will definitely make her teammates more successful offensively.”
As for Brozak, Booher says she’ll enable the Lakers to run a successful two-point-guard offense, “She has great ball-handling skills and she gives us depth up top. She’ll also be a good defender.”
Two other Laker defenders are freshmen Tamika James and Kristen Csontos.
“James is a hard-worker and she has a nose for the ball when it comes to rebounding, “said Coach Booher, “Csontos has a great desire that will be valuable at both ends of the court.”
“I’m pleased with the players we have this season,” said Coach Booher, “They have a lot of talent, but our success will be based on more than that. I can only put five on the floor at once, so all of them will have to learn to accept whatever role the coaches put them in.”
“If we can remain together on the floor and eliminate concerns over playing time and personal statistics, the result will be a successful season,” said Coach Booher.
The season also depends on how well the Lakers handle a tough conference schedule and independent match-ups and tournaments.
“Cincinnati State claims to have the strongest team in years, so they should be the league favorite,” said Coach Booher, “Clark State and Sinclair have added major size and all seven of the schools will play fast-paced basketball.”
Laker Assistant Coach John Menglekamp predicts the conference race will be a close one, but promises this will be the most intense team that’s taken the floor and represented Lakeland in the past few years, “A lot of people doubt our abilities this year and think we can’t possibly be as good as last year.”
But all you doubters, stick around, the Lakers are sure to convince. And if Coach Perella gets his wish, the Laker pirhana-pressure defense will be unleashed.
So Laker opponents take note…it’s feeding time!

If you're a high school athlete with your sights set on playing Division I, II or NAIA basketball, then Lakeland is the right place for you.

Our basketball program is designed to allow freshmen to step on the court immediately and begin perfecting their game.  As a junior college, Lakeland gives athletes the opportunity to strengthen their skills for the next level without being locked into a four-year program.

The opportunity to play Division I, II or NAIA ball may not be waiting for you upon graduation from high school, but it could be there upon graduation from Lakeland.  Also, possible offers on the table at this point in your basketball career can only get better after a successful two years at Lakeland.

Our coaching staff prides itself on maintaining relationships with four-year colleges.  Check out the list of higher level programs that were in the stands and in contact with our program this past season looking to take Lakers to the next level:
