son of Bobbie Avery and Andre Avery… working on his associate of business
degree… BROWN ON AVERY: “Keon was a walk-on player one year ago,
who worked hard all season long. We’re hoping he continues to work hard
so he can see more playing time this season. He’s a guard with nice quickness
and aggressiveness. He’s also a nice kid and we’re glad to have him back
this year. Not only does he work hard at basketball, but he also works
hard in the classroom and that’s very important.”

Head
Coach: Willis Brown
The
2001-02 season marks Coach Brown’s seventh season on the Lakeland coaching
staff. He was the assistant coach for four years, and then became the interim
head coach at the end of the 1998-99 season. As the interim head coach,
Brown’s squad went 7-3 and won the OCCAC State Tournament. Last year, the
Lakers had a below .500 year, but Coach Brown hopes to change that. He
oversees all operations with emphasis on recruiting. This year Coach Brown
and his staff have recruited a strong class who will definitely be competitive
within the league.
As for the Lakeland
philosophy, Coach Brown agrees with the emphasis on the education of the
student athlete both in the classroom and on the court.
“Our administration
and Director of Athletics, Scott Barlow, create an atmosphere for our athletes
to have every possible opportunity to become success stories,” Brown said.
Coach Brown is a 1995
graduate of Baldwin Wallace College with a bachelor’s degree in business
administration and a minor in sports administration. He is currently the
Chagrin Falls Park Community Center Recreation Director. He currently resides
in Chagrin Falls and has two daughters, Miranda (10) and newborn Breanna.
Terry
Bowe, Assistant Coach
This is Coach Bowe’s second year with the Lakers. His responsibilities include running strength and conditioning programs, compiling statistics and aiding in recruiting. He is a 1996 graduate of Baldwin Wallace College with a bachelor’s degree in communications. Currently, he is the Assistant Human Resources Director for University Hospital Health Systems Mednet Division. Coach Bowe resides in Maple Heights.
Chris
Ulrich, Assistant Coach
This is Coach Ulrich’s fourth year with the Lakers. His responsibilities include working with post players, formulating scouting reports and breaking down game films. He is a 1992 graduate of Baldwin Wallace College with a bachelor’s degree in business. Coach Ulrich is a former B.W. teammate of Coach Brown. He is currently a customer service manager for Transfer Express, which is off of Tyler Boulevard in Mentor. This is his ninth year working at the company. Coach Ulrich resides in Mentor.

Recruiting
Our basketball program is designed to allow freshmen to step on the court immediately and begin perfecting their game. As a junior college, Lakeland gives athletes the opportunity to strengthen their skills for the next level without being locked into a four-year program.
The opportunity to play
Division I, II or NAIA ball may not be waiting for you upon
graduation from high school, but
it could be there upon graduation from Lakeland. Also, possible offers
on the table at this point in your basketball career can only get better
after a successful two years at Lakeland.
Our coaching staff prides itself on maintaining relationships with four-year colleges. Check out the list of higher level programs that were in the stands and in contact with our program this past season looking to take Lakers to the next level:
