In 2001, the Lakers were crowned champion in the Lakeland Invitational and the State and Sub-Region XII Tournaments. Now in 2002, as Head Coach Lenny Nixon enters his second year with the team, he has even more talent to work with.
“We’re 100-percent better than last year,” said Coach Nixon, “I now have seven golfers that are also students, rather than students that happen to be golfers.”
The seven golfers include two sophomores and five incoming freshman. John Fullerman is the only returner to have been recognized by the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference last season, as an All-OCCAC selection.
With an emphasis placed on the off-season strength and conditioning program, it’s inevitable this year’s team will experience success in daily practices, the spring trip and regular and post-season play. Both the coaching staff and team members are setting their goals high in 2002. Among the accomplishments the Lakers will be striving for are an OCCAC championship, wins at the state and sub-region levels and advancement in the Region XII Tournament. After a third place conference finish last season, the Lakers are looking forward to improving their standing within the league and using it as a stepping stone to prepare individuals for qualification to the National Championship Tournament that will be held in Phoenix, Arizona at the end of May.
As for Coach Nixon’s thoughts on this year’s team, “Lookout for the Lakers and our aggressive approach to the game of golf.”

Head Coach: Lenny Nixon - 2nd Year
The 2002 season is Coach Nixon’s second year as Lakeland’s head golf coach. In his first year of coaching, his 2001 team earned championship honors at the Lakeland Invitational, State Tournament and Sub-Region XII Tournament. The team also finished third in the OCCAC.
Although it's only his second year as the team's head coach, Coach Nixon has been around Lakeland and golf for the past 13 years. As a part-time physical education faculty member, he has taught the game of golf, among other sports, to hundreds of Lakeland students. He has also coached football for a combined 17 years at several different levels. Among the schools Coach Nixon brought his talents were Willoughby South High School, John F. Kennedy Junior High School, West Geauga High School and Case Western Reserve University.
Coach Nixon is a graduate of the University of Buffalo, where he received his bachelor’s degree in physical education, health and recreation. He is currently the owner of NMSECO Inc. He resides in Chardon with his wife of 29 years, Lucy, and his three children, Andrew, 26, Jennifer, 24 and Jessica, 22.

RESULTS
It was definitely the year of the Laker in 2002. Capturing first place finishes in three conference outings, as well as finishing second in the remaining two, Lakeland won the OCCAC title. They also went on to win the Sub-Region XII Tournament, finish fourth in the Region XII Tournament and qualify two golfers to the NJCAA Tournament in Phoenix, Arizona.
AWARDS
Freshman Geoff Wood earned First-Team All-OCCAC honors after leading the
conference, as well as the region, in hole average. Sophomore Mike Richey and
freshman T.J. Nadon also were members of the OCCAC First-Team after finishing
among the league's top 10 golfers. Head Coach Lenny Nixon was voted OCCAC
Coach of the Year in only his second year with the team. Wood was also a Region
XII First-Team selection as he and Richey qualified for this season's national
tournament.

Wood and freshman Adam Dean were honored as STAR Students for their achievements in the classroom fall semester. Dean and freshman Jim Weikamp received STAR honors spring semester.

RECORDS
Lakeland won a conference outing other than their own for the first time in 12
years after shooting a 318 at the Sinclair Invitational. They also shot a conference low round score of 292 at the Columbus Invitational and a sub-Region XII round
score low of 294. Wood became the first Ohio golfer in the history of the Region XII tournament to take home top honors. Wood and Richey also finished among the
top 50 golfers at the NJCAA Tournament, a first in Lakeland history. Wood was 37th and Richey was 50th.
