THREE VOICES AT LAKELAND COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Three Voices, paintings, drawings and fabric by Anna Arnold, Teresa Hess and Janet T. Marcus, will be on display at Lakeland Community College from March 7 through April 7, in the Performing Arts Center Gallery.  There will be an artists reception on March 7 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.

Much like an actor, Anna Arnold enjoys experiencing, exploring and projecting her deepest emotions into psychologically powerful and sensuously colorful portraits.  She says, "My vividly colorful, functional ceramics are humorous portrayals of flowers, fish and nature.  They are made from low fire white clay and decorated with underglaze colored and fired with a non-toxic clear glaze.

Anna Arnold is a life-long Clevelander with a bachelor of find arts degree from the Cleveland Institute of Art.  In 1994 the Ohio Arts Council awarded her a grant for Individual Artists Fellowship.  Ms. Arnold's work has been displayed throughout the West and East Coasts, including at the May Show at the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Teresa Hess says, "Contemplative and private moments are extremely important to me.  I try to achieve this sense of stillness in my art, to find that peace through the act of creating.  I do not care to reflect what is going on in our hectic lives but attempt to find that 'quiet' area, that moment of repose -- minimal color, minimal movement.  Everything I draw or paint, no matter how simple or mundane, is like an actor on stage telling hi/her story to those who momentarily pause and listen."

Teresa Hess, an assistant professor of art at Lakeland Community College, earned Master of Science degrees in sociology at Pittsburg State University and fine arts at Queens College of the City University of New York.  She earned bachelors degrees in sociology from Wichita State University and fine arts from the Kansas City Art Institute.  Ms. Hess' artworks have been exhibited extensively in Ohio, Kansas, New York.

Janet T. Marcus calls the body of her work "The Spirit of Woman."  "I hand sew, hand bead and hand dye these women into existence," Ms. Marcus explains.  "I breathe life into them from my heart and soul.

Ms. Marcus' women are strong, empowered and enlightened.  They are icons and archetypes, meant to inspire onlookers to greater heights and spiritual awareness.  "Women are the life givers and the creative energy beings of this and all other lifetimes," says Ms. Marcus.

Ms. Marcus earned a master of business administration from Xavier University and a bachelor of fine arts from the University of Cincinnati.  Her work has been exhibited extensively throughout northern Ohio, and in Pennsylvania, Georgia and Wyoming.

The Lakeland Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9 am to 9 pm and on weekends from 9 am to 5 pm.  Professor Walter Swyrydenko is the director of the gallery.
